Critical hype can have often have an inverse effect on me as a viewer; the more praise critics lavish on a movie, the more of them that describe it as a ‘masterpiece’, ‘must-see’ or as ‘the greatest <insert genre> film ever’, the more unlikely I am to want to see it, especially why the hype is in full swing. Hype can colour your opinion of a movie before you ever see it; if every critic under the sun has waxed lyrical on its brilliance, it’s easy to get swept up in the zeitgeist yourself and not look at the piece as objectively as you should.
